The project Uranium Willy is a result of the creative melting pot that has been burgeoning at Stafford Sound, with musicians co-habiting and inspiring one another in a highly charged environment. Uranium Willy is an inevitable result of this cross-pollination, and has quickly evolved into a completely unique and confident independent band. With two tracks on the alternative charts at mp3.com, a full-length CD release, and a string of live dates in the wings, the creature is ready to pounce. The music is a new hybrid of psych-rock, dub, ambient minimalism, and a strange obsession with jajouka rhythms. This project is about bring all that is hidden, all that is primordial and electric, out into a state of wakened, sonic hallucination.

MARK JOHNSON - Former front man, singer -songwriter with STRAWMAN and experimental group ZANG TUMB TUMB, radical queer performing artist who likes to blow things up and slice himself with sharp objects, he is the rhythm section and front man, developing the material from writhing drum machines, percussion and pummeling bass lines, which are the driving force behind the songwriting. On Uranium Willy's first offering (self titled, Uranium Willie) Mark Johnson is the writer and producer of all pieces.  Arrangements are by Johnson in concert with Headon and Reynolds. Rough Magick, is Uranium Willy's second CD offering comprising again, Mark Johnson as the writer and producer of all pieces. Arrangements are by Johnson in concert with Reynolds, Kearns and McKevy. Willy's later CD albums echo this creative thrust with guest musicians sitting in on various tracks.

DAVE HEADON - With a strong background in just about any device that utters sound, Dave's astonishing left and right handed balance in playing has led him to doing perverse things with guitars, moogs, oscillators and various un-nameable boxes with switches and knobs.

SCOTT REYNOLDS - Scott breathes guitar, eats guitar, sleeps guitar, fucks guitar, caresses it, attacks it, abuses it, and whose song writing power with THE FUTZ would make Beck and Noel Gallagher shit triangles. An enigmatic madman to all who know him.

SEAN KEARNS - Keyboards, mellotron, glockenspiel and technical wisdom.

Guest Musicians on Uranium Willy Debut include:

  • Michael Kumor - Throat singing, Tibetan Bells on 'Tickling the Dragon's Tail'.
  • Randall Fox - Lead Guitar on 'Lucky Lamb'.

Guest Musicians on Rough Magick include:

  • Anna Pileggi - guest vocals on 'Prisoners of Earth Come Out...'
  • Dave McKevy - Guitar on 'Dirty Bomb'.

There are a few cover pieces interspersed over the first three albums which need proper accreditation.

  • On Uranium Willy One: 'Last Call' is written by Patti Smith, 'My Shadow in Vain' is by Gary Numan, and 'My World is Empty' is by Holland - Dozier - Holland.
  • On Uranium Willy Live : 'Godstar', is written by Genesis P. Orridge.
  • On Rough Magick: 'The Bed's Too Big Without You', is written by Gordon Sumner

URANIUM WILLY --- Press Release 2002

Nothing is true,
Everything is permitted...(Hassan I Sabbah)

URANIUM WILLY combines the raw energy of psych rock with the hypnotic power electronic rhythm, and churning dub influences. This band has summoned a new homunculus, driven by jajouka-inspired polyrhythms that are thousands of years old, and placing them in the context of hallucinogenic rock. Their sound could be described as Godspeed You Black Emperor! meets NEU! They procreate with Moroccan extraterrestrials.
